  1. National Vanilla Ice Cream Day

We are in a global heatwave, the temperatures have been excessive in Texas, Japan and the UK to name a few.

Today is a perfect way to celebrate and to cool off on National Vanilla Ice Cream Day. Vanilla Ice Cream is one of the favorite flavors. The Library of Congress has Thomas Jefferson’s handwritten copy of his Vanilla Ice Cream recipe.

Vanilla is an edible fruit from the orchid family and is the largest family of flowering plants in the world.

  2. National Pecan Pie Day

Today is National Pecan Pie Day.

The Native Americans used pecans more than 8,000 years ago according to the Archaeological evidence found in Texas.

The Native American Quinipissa and Tangipahoa tribes introduced the pecan to the French after they settled in New Orleans. Some have stated that the French invented the pecan pie. Others have said that the pecan pie existed in Alabama in the 1800’s, but there are not any recipes to document this. The Pecan Pie is a staple of the Southern U.S.

Texas proclaimed The Pecan Pie its official dessert in 2013. The Pecan Tree is the official tree of Texas and is also the official nut.
